  Making a Commission

If you would like a special piece of artwork, perhaps a painting to remind you of an experience or as a gift for someone with a particular interest, read this section and contact me to discuss any painting ideas that you may have.

  Consider the following:
  • Subject
  • Design (communicate every detail of any specific ideas you have)
  • Dimensions (if it needs to fit a particular space)
  • Budget
  • Time scale (whether there is a deadline for the completion of the painting)
  Estimates

Prices are slightly above those of my existing originals. If your requirements are urgent there will be an extra premium. You should look at some of my paintings that fall within your budget as a basis for your expectations. My commissions start at around £850.

Prices vary according to the following:
  • the extent of fieldwork and research preparation required
  • the complexity of the design
  • the amount of detailed brushwork
  • how flexible you can be with the deadline.
  • any extra expenses likely to be incurred

I try my best to work within the budget but please note that on completion of a commissioned painting I reserve the right to offer it at a price that I judge reflects the work I've done.

  "On the Easel"

The "on the easel" webpage is often used to share the creative process with my clients. Customers follow the progress of their commission on-line and are sent an e-mail whenever the page has an updated camera shot of their artwork. This idea is proving very popular and printing out the development stages from the webpage adds a little extra to the provenance of the finished painting.

  Two-way agreement

If you have selected me to paint a commission for you I appreciate it very much, but it is important that I too feel positive about the idea.

I ask myself the following questions when considering a proposal:

  • Can I create a worthy result?

  • Is the subject matter familiar to me or will I be able to study it or find helpful source material?

  • Am I inspired?

  • Am I provided with a suitable time scale to accommodate my existing commitments?

If I accept a commission and feel that the subject matter is not too specialist I would be happy to work up a painting and show it to you for approval. Initially I would send a quality e-mail image and then a 5 x 4 inch transparency by post. If for whatever reason the painting did not meet your requirements there would be no obligation to take things any further and I would simply add the work to my next exhibition. If you chose to buy the painting my normal terms and conditions would apply. View details on my wildlife art for sale page.

With a commission of a more specialist nature I might have to insist on a deposit before I begin work and payment for the finished painting.

Please note that the painting I produce will never be exactly the image that you are visualizing, but I aim to please.

  Requests

Frequently customers ask me whether I would contact them if I ever produce a painting of a particular bird, animal or location.

Please register your interests and special requests so that if I later generate suitable work from my fieldtrips I can get in touch.
